Teaching Philosophy
As a dance educator I strive to give all students the tools and confidence they need to be successful both in and out of the classroom. My goal is to produce independent thinkers and explorers who are not afraid to approach any challenge with creativity, curiosity, and assurance. I teach dance students to work in a manner that is safe for their bodies and minds, respectful, and cooperative with their peers. Building relationships with my students is vital, and I endeavor to create a classroom environment that is conducive to questioning, experimenting, and collaborating.
This environment is impossible to achieve without safety. As an educator, it is my highest responsibility to create a classroom that is inclusive and accepting of all students, making space for each individual to thrive. I believe students perform at their best when they feel respected and valued. I want students to learn movement from "the inside out," feeling and understanding what is correct for their unique body. I want students to understand the "why" as well as the "how" of their technique, putting each style into its historical context. My language choices are nonjudgemental, inclusive, and invite questioning and discussion. Equality, accessibility, and fairness are just some of the essential elements of my classes, as I believe every student has the potential to grow and excel as an artist.
It is my duty to be prepared, to communicate clearly, and have a thorough understanding of the material I present. I strive to be approachable, accessible, and maintain a sense of humor in and out of the classroom. It is my hope that I can help every student find their passion for dance and the arts.
